ABN achieves Cradle to Cradle Certified® Gold, leading the way to sustainability in the pipe and thermoplastics industry

Commitment to the future: Innovation, circularity and sustainability at every step

ABN Pipe Systems is a manufacturer of thermoplastic pipe systems and fittings specialising in innovative, sustainable and high quality solutions for the construction and engineering sectors. With production headquarters in Medina del Campo, it develops products that ensure compliance with the strictest European and international standards.

However, what really sets ABN apart is its commitment to sustainability, reflected in the achievement of Cradle to Cradle Certified® Gold level re-certification for two product lines: the ABN//EVAC ENERGY PLUS and ABN//INSTAL CT FASER RD systems.

In 2024, it decided to reaffirm and elevate this commitment to the environment, with the Cradle to Cradle Certified® Gold re-certification and the C2C Certified Material Health Certificate™ Products Standard Version 3.1 and Product Circularity V4.0.

Throughout this process ABN was supported and accompanied by Eco Intelligent Growth (EIG), one of the 10 entities accredited as C2C Certified® Assessment Body worldwide to advise on the certification process in the 5 assessment categories (Material Health; Product Circularity; Clean Air & Climate Protection; Water & Soil Stewardship; Social Fairness).

At the end of the recertification, EIG wanted to assess ABN’s perception of the challenges, motivations and impact of the certification on its activity.

We spoke to ABN…

What were the main challenges ABN faced during the recertification process?

The biggest challenges were related to the supply chain and suppliers. Meeting the high standards of the material health section was a challenge, as not all suppliers could provide the necessary transparency. We also had to work on the social part of the certification, which required a more in-depth approach. Cradle to Cradle Certified® allowed us to define clear objectives and procedures that facilitated our transition to version 4.0 of the standard.

How has this certification driven innovation at ABN?

Innovation has always been key for us. Through this process, we launched an R&D&I project that will run until 2026, focused on increasing the circularity of our products through recycling and waste recovery, which will also reduce our carbon footprint.

What impact has certification had on the perception of your customers?

We have noticed a growing interest from our customers for Cradle to Cradle Certified® products. The fact that our customers rely on ABN for their projects allows them to move towards sustainability, especially in sectors where the circularity of materials is increasingly valued.

In a context of increasingly stringent European regulations, which demand healthier and more sustainable products, ABN is positioned as a benchmark in the industry. The future of construction materials will be defined by their ability to be recycled and reincorporated into the production cycle without compromising people’s health or the environment, and ABN, with its C2C Certified® certification, is already one step ahead on this path.
