Busch-Jaeger Elektro GmbH with headquarters in Lüdenscheid (Germany) and ABB group company, has strengthened its leadership in the sector by being the first switch manufacturer in the world to obtain the Cradle to Cradle Certified™Basic label for the Future Linear product family, starting with about 35 references in white. Leader of the international market with more than 130 years of experience and with more than 1,300 workers in the two German locations, it exports its products to more than 60 countries around the world.
C2C Certified Basic: first step towards optimization
Future Linear has reached the Basic level of the program, a provisional entry level to certification; however, in most categories Busch-Jaeger could apply for higher levels. The company has chosen to take this first step as an approach to the certification scheme in order to validate the current potential of this product line and explore possible future opportunities for improvement.
The starting project with the Cradle to Cradle Certified ™ Product Standard certification scheme has served to help Busch-Jaeger understand the complexity of its supply chain and also increase the traceability of the components used in the manufacture of its products.
Although BJE already has multiple legal and environmental requirements in its purchasing policy that restrict the selection of materials, compliance with the most basic requirement of certification is now also incorporated: all components must be free of any chemical included in the list of problematic substances by the Cradle to Cradle Certified ™ Product Standard.
PVC, widely used in the manufacture of plastic and electrical components, is one of these substances. Obtaining the Cradle to Cradle Certified ™ award for the Future Linear family allows Busch-Jaeger to demonstrate that these references are PVC-free.
Best practices in energy and water issues
In the areas related to the manufacturing process, such as Water Stewardship and Renewable Energy & Carbon Management, Busch-Jaeger has different strategies and internal policies implemented very aligned with the requirements to reach Gold and even Platinum level. To name one, the company generates renewable energy in the same manufacturing plant being able to supply more than 50% of their demand.
Congratulations to Busch-Jaeger for this great achievement by using Cradle to Cradle Certified ™ Product Standard as a design and verification tool for the Circular Economy.
