LIFE DPP-TEX – Digital Product Passport for the Circularity of the European Textile Sector

LIFE DPP-TEX is a European project that develops and validates Digital Product Passports (DPPs), digital tools designed to collect and share information on the composition, origin, traceability, impacts, and circularity of textile products. Through real-life pilots, the project will demonstrate how different circular strategies can be supported by reliable data to optimise resource use, create value, and facilitate the replication of these models across other sectors and value chains.

Sector challenge :

Textiles are one of the most resource-intensive sectors in Europe: the EU generates 6.9 million tonnes of textile waste every year, of which only 12% is separately collected for reuse or recycling. The lack of traceability and reliable data hinders material circularity and the sector’s ability to adapt to new European sustainability requirements.

Solution:

LIFE DPP-TEX addresses this gap by adapting Digital Product Passport (DPP) technology (building on BLUEROOM’s CircularPass platform) to provide manufacturers, recyclers, and public procurers with a reliable way to track fibre origin, composition, recycled content, end-of-life pathways, and environmental impacts for each product.

Thanks to this enhanced traceability, the project supports circular decision-making, improves transparency across the textile value chain, and contributes to compliance with future European sustainability and circularity requirements.

Project:

Co-funded by the LIFE Programme of the European Union, the project brings together 8 partners from 3 countries (Spain, Bulgaria, and the Netherlands) over a 30-month period (2026-2028) to advance digitalisation and circularity in the textile sector. The DPP solution is implemented and validated through two real industrial pilots.

LIFE DPP-TEX is designed to help the sector prepare for upcoming EU regulations (the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and the Waste Framework Directive), while also transforming its outcomes into viable business models that can be adopted by industry. The knowledge, tools, and methodologies developed throughout the project will support uptake and replication in other regions and sectors.

Goals:

  • Technology

    Adapt and demonstrate a Digital Product Passport for the textile sector, building on BLUEROOM's existing CircularPass platform.

  • Validation

    Test the DPP in two real industrial pilots: closed-loop textile recycling in Bulgaria and workwear reuse/upcycling in Spain, covering different value chains and business models.

  • Traceability

    Track fibre origin, composition, recycled content and end-of-life pathway for every product processed in the pilots.

  • Environmental Impact

    Quantify the environmental benefits of circular textile practices (CO₂, water and energy savings) through integrated Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) data.

  • Regulatory Readiness

    Support compliance with the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and the Waste Framework Directive, helping the sector prepare ahead of mandatory requirements.

  • Industry adoption and replication

    Turn pilot results into viable business models for industry adoption and enable replication of the DPP solution to other regions and other textile-related sectors, supported by an After-LIFE Plan and transferability roadmap.

What information does a DPP require?

A Digital Product Passport (DPP) requires reliable information on:

  1. Material origin and composition
  2. Verified recycled content
  3. End-of-life strategies
  4. Circularity indicators
  5. Carbon footprint
  6. Water consumption
  7. Energy consumption measured through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

The LIFE DPP-TEX project validates how this information can be collected, managed, and communicated under real-life conditions.

2 complementary pilots:

The DPP solution is tested through two real industrial pilot projects:

1. Spain

Reuse, upcycling and recycling of discarded municipal workwear in Spain.

Alsico Iberia and EIG will implement a circular model for discarded municipal uniforms from Barcelona (BSM), combining reuse, repair, transformation, upcycling, and recycling strategies to maximise material recovery and extend product life cycles.

2. Bulgaria

Closed-loop recycling of home textiles in Bulgaria.

TexCycle and Kalinel will implement a closed-loop recycling system to recover textile waste and progressively increase the recycled content of new products.

Consortium of 8 partners:

The LIFE DPP-TEX project brings together, in a holistic way, stakeholders from across the entire textile value chain. This multi-actor approach ensures that the proposed solution is technically robust, aligned with regulatory requirements, highly replicable, and reflective of the real needs of both large companies and SMEs within the circular economy framework.

EIG’s role in Life DPP-TEX:

EIG contributes its expertise in circular economy for the textile sector, material assessment, and traceability.
Within the Spanish pilot, EIG plays a dual role. On the one hand, it leads garment sorting and redesign activities, supporting the development of circular strategies for textile workwear, identifying reuse and recycling opportunities, and implementing the circular options selected by Alsico. On the other hand, drawing on the rigorous methodology derived from its role as a Cradle to Cradle Certified® assessment body, EIG supports the project coordinator and consortium partners in achieving the project objectives, including the development of Digital Product Passports (DPPs) to improve material traceability and circularity, as well as Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) to identify the impacts of the new circular business models.
  • Identification of the most suitable circular solutions for workwear throughout its value chain:
    • Reuse
    • Transformation
    • Upcycling
    • Recycling
  • Prioritisation and recommendation of strategic partners to maximise the potential for reuse, repair, and value recovery of textile products.
  • Coordination and implementation of circular models that reduce waste, retain material value for longer, and integrate social impact indicators, while assessing their scalability.
  • Support in the design and implementation of data collection processes, ensuring the traceability of materials and products.
  • Contribution to the development of Digital Product Passports (DPPs) with reliable information on composition, traceability, and environmental impacts.

Main challenges:

  • 60.000

    circular products, each with its own Digital Product Passport, by 2028.

  • 27 t

    tonnes of textile waste processed through two industrial pilots by 2028.

Together, the two pilots aim to process approximately 27 tonnes of textile waste, generate around 60,000 circular products, create 10 new jobs, and save an estimated 110 tonnes of CO₂, 6.3 million litres of water, and 1.9 million MJ of energy.
