SIMPLR – circular and sustainable stand
Client: Simplr
Project: Simplr stand for the 4YFN fair, within the Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2023
Context: Simplr, the pay-per-use platform, implemented circularity in its stand during the MWC Barcelona. EIG – Grupo Construcía, as experts in circular construction, advised on materials and construction solutions with circularity criteria. In this way, we demonstrated that ephemeral constructions, such as stands, can also be circular.
Main challenges:
-
Circular stand with positive impact
Design, construction, deconstruction and management
Scope of the project
- Identification and quantification of materials.
- Analysis of health and circularity.
- Proposal of alternatives based on the Lean2Cradle® methodology, materials with better environmental and circular behaviour. The proposals are oriented towards the integration of Cradle to Cradle® certified products or those aligned with their performance, in order to maximise the use of healthy and perpetually cyclable materials.
- Development of a Materials Passport to quantify and locate the materials installed and understand their impact.
- Integration in MyUpcyclea: digital duplicate of the building for the management of the products installed in the stand, acting as future material banks.
- Circular signature of the stand, with analysis of the environmental impacts of the stand.
- Materials custody contract for the correct management of materials.
Achievements
-
Sustainability
The most sustainable stand of the MWC 2023 edition
-
Carbon footprint -0.848 tonnes CO2 eq.
By selecting the right materials it is possible to reduce the carbon footprint considerably, even, as in this case, to achieve a negative footprint. A negative carbon footprint (i.e. less than zero indicates ‘better than carbon neutral’) is possible for products made of wood, such as the FINSA panels used. During growth, trees absorb CO 2 from the atmosphere which is sequestered in the wood product (and therefore no longer warms the planet) for as long as it is in use.
-
Healthiness 87%
The use of C2C® certified products guarantees the absence of toxic substances in their manufacture. Knowing the composition of the materials is key at this stage. We have information on 87.38% of the total materials installed and 100% of these are free of toxicity for people and the environment. For the remaining 12.62%, no data is available. *The healthiest product is TITAN paint (100% healthy).
-
Circularity 93,62%
Thanks to the use of materials and products with a defined recovery pathway at the end of their intended use, and a construction design that focuses on the deconstruction and recovery of the products, a high degree of circularity of the space is achieved. To avoid products ending up in landfill or incineration, we have agreements with different partners that guarantee their recovery. *The most circular products used are the HONEXT boards (100% circularity) and the VERDTICAL vegetal wall (96% circularity).
-
Cyclability rate 99.25%
The materials, at the end of their use in the project, will be reused, recycled or remanufactured, i.e. all the nutrients that make up the materials remain in the technical or biological cycle.
-
Wastes 0,75%
Of the 100% of the stand weight (17,213 kg), only 0.75% was considered non-recovered waste (129 kg).
